Okay, so, I’ve been tinkering with my Yamaha YBR 125 lately, and thought I’d share my little adventure.

It all started when I noticed this weird clicking sound and a bit of power loss, especially when I pushed it to around 6k-7k RPM. Plus, the rev-meter started acting crazy above those revs. It was like the bike was having a mini freak-out. I was worried.
First thing I did was to check the spark plug. I’d heard that a bad gap could mess things up, so I adjusted it to somewhere between 0.60mm and 0.70mm. Still no luck. The problem was still there, mocking me.
Then, one day, the bike just refused to start on the first try. And it wasn’t just a one-time thing. It became a regular headache. I noticed a flashing fault code on the engine management light, but I’m no mechanic, so I had no idea what to do with that. I could sometimes get it to start by bump starting it, but that wasn’t a real solution. And it’s a bit embarrassing, to be honest.
I remembered reading somewhere to start from the ignition switch and work back to the ECU. I located the ECU tucked away in a rubber mount on the top frame tube, under the tank. It was a bit of a hunt, but I found it.
Also, I checked the fuel I was using. Apparently, for the YBR 125, with its 10:1 compression ratio engine, the octane should be between 92 and 100. I was using the right stuff, so that wasn’t the issue either.

The bike’s a four-stroke, air-cooled engine, and it usually has plenty of zip for city riding or even hitting the motorway. It can hit about 70 mph, which is pretty decent. But with these issues, it was just not performing right.
I talked to a friend who knows a bit about bikes, and he mentioned something about clutch slip. He said if the revs shoot up but the bike doesn’t speed up much, it could be that. But I wasn’t really experiencing that. It felt more like a misfire to me.
I even took it to a local shop, Capital Motors, since I’m around Islamabad. They took a look, but honestly, they weren’t much help. They messed around with it a bit but couldn’t pinpoint the problem. Maybe I needed to find a more specialized mechanic.
After all this, I’m still scratching my head. It’s frustrating, but I’m not giving up. I’ve learned a bit more about my bike, which is cool, I guess. I bought this bike recently, and I was expecting some smooth riding, not these weird problems.
- Checked and adjusted the spark plug gap.
- Located the ECU under the tank.
- Confirmed I was using the correct fuel octane.
- Ruled out clutch slip as the main issue.
- Visited a local shop, but they couldn’t fix it.
So, that’s where I’m at. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, but hey, that’s part of owning a bike, right? I’ll keep digging and hopefully get to the bottom of this. If any of you have had similar issues or have any tips, I’m all ears!
