First off, I started pulling up all the stats I could find. She had this crazy record, 13 wins, 5 second-place finishes, and no third place, from 19 starts. Can you believe that? And get this, she earned over $3.5 million! So, I wrote all that down. Then, I looked into where she ended up after racing. Turns out, she retired to Stonestreet Farm, right there in Lexington, Kentucky. I noted that too, because it’s kind of like the end of one chapter, right?
But the story doesn’t just stop when her racing career did. I found out she had a foal, Jess’s Dream, named after her late owner. This little guy even won his first race at Saratoga in 2015. I was like, “Wow, that’s a legacy!” I also found that her second foal is named Rachel’s Valentina. It’s cool and I marked all of that down.
Then, I stumbled upon this whole drama with another horse, Zenyatta. They were both big deals, but Rachel Alexandra beat her out for Horse of the Year in 2009. I’m reading through all these old articles, and people were really going at it, debating who was better. I found out that Rachel Alexandra was the first 3-year-old filly to win that award in the Eclipse era. And guess what? The next year, Zenyatta won it after losing her last race. Oh, and she’s on that show, “Virgin River.” I don’t watch it, but maybe I should now!
